My 30-year-old world record ‘not a good sign for athletics’ – Edwards

Former British triple jumper Jonathan Edwards has expressed concern over the longevity of his world record, which has stood for over 30 years.

Edwards set the record of 18.29 meters in 1995 and it remains unbroken to this day. He believes that the lack of progress in the event is a worrying sign for athletics as a whole.

“It’s not a good sign for the sport when records stand for so long. It shows a lack of improvement and innovation in training methods and techniques,” Edwards said in a recent interview.

The 55-year-old former athlete urged current jumpers to push the boundaries and strive for new records to keep the sport exciting and competitive.

“Athletics is all about pushing the limits and setting new benchmarks. If my record stands for another 30 years, it will be a sad reflection on the state of the sport,” he added.

Edwards also emphasized the importance of clean competition and fair play in athletics, calling for stricter drug testing and anti-doping measures to maintain the integrity of the sport.

“It’s essential that athletes compete on a level playing field and that any form of cheating is eradicated from the sport. Only then can we truly celebrate the achievements of athletes,” he said.

Despite his concerns, Edwards remains proud of his record and the hard work and dedication that went into achieving it.

“Setting a world record was a dream come true for me and it’s something I will always cherish. But I also want to see the event evolve and new records being set in the future,” he concluded.
